September 2022 Fly of the Month – Lo-pro Stone

While fishing the Yellow Stonefly egg laying flights on the Lackawaxen, I experienced some nights the trout would refuse the usually reliable Lacky Stimulator.  This would be a particular problem when fishing the calmer water of the pool.  When this happened, I switched to a pattern I had used previous to the Stimulator.  I believe its lower profile and slimmer appearance better imitates the behavior of the natural and is more acceptable to the fish where they can get a good look at it.

When tying the wing it should be low along the body, somewhat sparse and extend slightly beyond the rear of the body.  The hackle is tied palmered over the thorax and clipped top and bottom.  The turns of the hackle are fairly tight but not so much as to obscure the underlying color.

Hook : Dry fly; 2xl, #8 – #12

Abdomen : Light yellow dubbing

Wing : Deer hair

Hackle : Dark dun

Thorax : Light yellow dubbing
