Zelon Dun

This modification of Craig Matthew’s Sparkle Dun is useful for those who have trouble working with the deer hair wing on the original particularly in the smaller sizes.  When tying the wing spread the zelon out in a fan.  Do not leave it clumped like a post.  Another advantage to using a synthetic as wing material is that it can be trimmed to shape after completion without detracting from its appearance like trimming deer hair would.  The recipe listed is for small olives, but by changing colors and sizes any mayfly can be imitated.  The length of the shuck and the height of the wing is the same as the body length.  Wrap the dubbing tight against the front of the wing to keep it upright.

Hook : Dry fly; #16 – #20

Shuck : Amber zelon

Wing : Light dun zelon

Body : Olive dubbing
