Scotty’s Midge

Some of the best dry fly fishing on western waters is midge fishing during the winter months.  As reported in a newsletter I received a couple of weeks ago from Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, MT,  the guys in the shop have come up with several midge patterns that I think might be of value if you fish midges on our local waters.  One pattern is called Scotty’s Midge, named after the guy who first tried it out with resulting success.  If you google Scotty’s Midge, you can watch a video of this fly being tied.

Hook : TMC 2488 or similar;   #18 – #22

Shuck and abdomen :   Red zelon (tie in the shuck and overwrap the zelon with the thread to the thorax)
