Tan Razor Caddis

This is another razor foam pattern from the guys at Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, MT.  They have come up with several caddis and mayfly patterns using razor foam for the bodies of the fly.  Razor foam is a thin foam that is packaged in two sizes, .5mm and 1mm.  When tying this pattern I use the 1mm foam for sizes #12 and 14 and the .5mm for sizes #16 and smaller.  This is a simple pattern to tie:  start by wrapping the thread from the eye to the bend of the hook, next cut a thin piece of razor foam and tie it in at the bend of the hook.  Next wrap the foam in close spirals up to the 3/4 point on the shank.  Next tie in 3 or 4 strands of crystal flash and trim it a little longer then the bend of the hook.  Tie in a hank of amber zelon and trim even with the flash.  Finally, for the wing use X caddis deer hair for the wing, tied slightly longer than the flash and zelon.
Hook- #12-18

Thread – 8/0 tan

Body – Opaque tan razor foam

Flash – Pearl crystal flash

Underwing -Amber Zelon

Wing – X Caddis deer hair
