Uncle Tom Sulfur

Back in the 90’s fellow TU members Paul Kurinec, Bob Dunstan and I use to take a week long camping trip to fish the West Branch of the Delaware River and the main stem.
One day at the campgrounds we met a plumber from Philadelphia who had a camper set up in the campground.
We offered him a couple Yuengling lagers and became friends with Uncle Tom as we called him.
The next day Tom took us on a guided tour of the West Branch and showed us some of his favorite fishing spots.
One pool was Tom’s favorite sulfur pool.

Back at his camper he showed us the only fly he used when the sulfurs were hatching.

A fly that we called the Uncle Tom Sulfur.

Hook – Dry fly
#16, 18

Thread – Flo. Red 8/0

Tail – Lt. Ginger

Body – Lt. Yellow dubbing

Hackle – Lt. Ginger

When tying this fly the tail length and front hackle should be slightly larger then the hook size.
Dub the body all the way up to the eye, then wrap the bare thread to the 1/3 point, tie in the hackle and wrap up to the eye in slightly open spiral wraps,

Make sure to let the red thread show through the wraps.
