Olive Dorato
A previous FOM back in July 2009 was the Dorato Hare’s Ear. The DHE was tied to represent an active caddis. Bill Dorato, who came up with the pattern, tied hackle Catskill style and then trimmed it even with the hook point. This makes the fly easier to skitter when the trout were chasing caddis flies with a lot of movement. Over the years several variations of the DHE were added to the original. One of them was the Olive Dorato. When I tie Dorato patterns I leave the hackle “full” and if I need to skitter the fly, I simply cut the hackle even with the hook point with a small pair of scissors I carry in my vest.
