Balloon Hammer Caddis
The Balloon Hammer caddis is an egg laying version of Roman Moser’s Balloon Caddis. It is a cross between that fly and the Klinkhamer style. The fly is similar to the parent pattern except for the addition of an egg sac and the use of a curved emerger style hook. Start the fly by tying on the foam which will be used as a locator about 1/3 back from the eye. Let it extend forward. Dub in an egg sac down around the bend of the hook. Then rough dub the abdomen up to the tie in position of the foam. Tie in the elk hair wing, tips extending back past the bend of the hook. Dub the thorax forward to the eye. Fold back the foam on top of the thorax and secure it at the original tie position. Trim the excess foam.
