Lively Caddis
For many years, Chauncy Lively wrote a fly tying column for the PA Angler magazine. This was the reason I subscribed to this magazine looking forward for a new pattern in 8 issues per year. One of the patterns that proved to be very successful was the micro caddis as it was called. Over the year’s we decided to call the fly the Lively Caddis. It is a simple fly to tie, but it is very productive. To tie this fly start by wrapping the thread to the bend of the hook. Next, tie in a brown and grizzly hackle with the glossy side facing the hook eye. Dub the body of the fly, then wrap the hackle in open spiral turn toward the hook eye. Trim the hackle on the top and bottom leaving the fibers stick out from the sides. Finally, tie in a wing of fine deer or elk hair and tie off elk hair style.
Hook -Dry fly #16 – 20
Thread 8/0 Tan or Olive
Body – Color to match natural (I use tan and bright green dubbing)
Hackle – Brown and Grizzly -one size bigger then hook size
Wing -Fine deer or elk hair
