Spruce Moth
The Spruce Moth is a scourge on fir and spruce trees in the mountain west. As bad as they are for the forests they can be a boon to the flyfisher. From midsummer into the early fall these prolific pests can be numerous along conifer lined steams. Although completely terrestrial they seem to have a fatal attraction to water. When the two meet the wings of the moth become waterlogged and the moth becomes easy prey for waiting fish. Both the underwing and the overwing are tied spent and split delta style. Trim the deer hair butts to form a head.
