Gary Lafontaine, one of the most innovative fly tiers of his time, looked at fly tying in a unique way. His idea was to divide flies into two major types, imitative and attractor patterns. The flame thrower is one of his attractor patterns. The manner in which this fly is tied might be called a variant fly, according to the Catskill style of tying, his choice of color makes it unique.

Tail – Cree hackle fibers (substitute barred dark ginger hackle)
Body – Hairline cream rabbit dubbing
Hackle – Cree and orange hackle mixed – oversized by 1 – 1 1/2 size
